Skycoin and John McAfee share a joint vision of a free, decentralized Internet
Update: In March 2019, Skycoin and John McAfee ended their relationship because McAfee began to demand payment in cash or Bitcoin in return for his promotional activity. Skycoin refused to pay since this was not part of the original agreement, and because McAfee had not yet delivered any significant promotional work, aside from several early tweets about the project. It is believed that McAfee may be under financial pressure as a result of his lifestyle and his ongoing investigation by the IRS, hence the unexpected demand for funds. The remainder of the page below is unchanged, and describes the relationship prior to this parting of ways.
Cryptocurrency advocate and political activist John McAfee has always been a strong supporter of an open and decentralized Internet, free from the control of corrupt governments and monopolistic ISPs. Skycoin's peer-to-peer Skywire meshnet delivers on this vision, however McAfee was unaware of the Skycoin project until a chance meeting with Synth at the Malta Blockchain Summit.
Synth and McAfee were scheduled to share the stage during a live debate entitled The Dark Side of the Chain. A recording of the debate can be seen below, along with McAfee's keynote speech at the summit.

After the debate, McAfee met Synth and the rest of the Skycoin team to further discuss the Skycoin ecosystem. McAfee fell in love with the project, realizing that it fulfilled his vision for a free and open Internet, offering the means to finally deliver true decentralization across the entire cryptocurrency sector.
The problem with all existing blockchain platforms is that they rely on the legacy Internet, which can easily be disabled by governments, invading forces, or natural disasters. Skycoin's Skywire meshnet solves this problem by decentralizing the underlying transport layer, thus bypassing ISPs and government-controlled infrastructure.
In fact, McAfee loved the Skycoin project so much that he had a tattoo of the Skycoin logo inked on his back, and he came on board as an official Skycoin partner. McAfee is running for US president in 2020, and he has selected Skycoin as the official technology partner for his #McAfee2020 presidential campaign

Both Skycoin and McAfee have stated that no money changed hands between the parties. Fudders often claim that McAfee was paid to get a Skycoin tattoo. But McAfee is already a wealthy man - he doesn't need more money, and it seems unlikely that he would get a permanent tattoo just for some extra cash.
Some time later, the Skycoin team spent a week at McAfee's home discussing strategy for the upcoming election campaign and Skycoin promotional activity. But it wasn't all work, the partners also spent time just hanging out, shooting guns, and cooking steak, as shown in the video below.
